The former Vice President and Turaki Adamawa, Atiku Abubakar explained to the British Broadcasting Corporation. BBC Hausa service why he has not been present in the Buhari Presidential Campaign rallies. According to Atiku, he will not attend the campaigns unless invited.
He faulted the way the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation was going about its campaign. He said they are already trying to correct it. He said he spoke with the Director General of the APC presidential Campaign Organisation, Governor Rotimi Amaechi the strategy of the campaign organisation which he said was wrong. He further said he told Amaechi that he will not attend any campaign rally without invitation.
On the speculation that he has been absent from APC activities because he is planning to go back to PDP, particularly, since he has held private meetings with President Jonathan, he said no such plans. He denied any plan to return to PDP. He said although the President recently paid a surprise visit to him and appealed that as a founding member of the PDP who worked for the growth of the party, he should return to the party, he told the president no. He also used the opportunity to dismiss speculations that the president met him on the issue of interim government. He said no such discussion was held.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
