The former Prime Minister of Britain Tony Blair paid a courtesy visit to the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari at the defence house, Abuja where he pledged the support of Britain to Nigeria. Tony Blair also met Vice President-elect Yemi Osinbajo and other members of the Buhari team.
Tony Blair said that the ability of Nigeria despite the tension and other challenges was able to pull through to conduct a peaceful election, show the maturity of the country’s democracy. He said Britain will do all within their means to support Nigeria. According to Blair, the world is impressed with the political maturity displayed by Nigeria. He said Nigeria could approach the country’s problem with the same attitude they surmount their problem.He said that Nigeria has earned respect of the whole world. He said there is now so much confidence in Nigeria. He added that Nigeria could overcome its security and other challenges with the same spirit and courage of its people. He said the future of Nigeria lies with Nigerians. According to Blair ‘ I will say to the President-elect there is tremendous support for you and the country.
Muhammadu Buhari expressed his gratitude the efforts of Britain and the US and other people of conscience in ensuring that the election was peaceful and credible. He assured that his government will have no choice but to meet the expectations of the Nigerian people. Buhari thanked Blair for his concern for the country and its people.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
