There are many players of African origins who have decided to play for European national teams rather than represent their African nations. We shall be looking at ten of the European internationals who are Africans.
David Olatukunbo Alaba, 22: Austria vs. Nigeria. The left footed defender off Bayern Munchen (Munich) was born on June 24, 1992 in Wien, Austria and has decided to play for the country of his birth rather than Nigeria the country of his father. A very powerful defender who moves forward to contribute to the attacking force of Bayern Munchen and Austria. Though a defender, he has scored many spectacular goals for club and country.
Mario Balotelli: Italy vs. Ghana. The Liverpool player is an important member of the Italian national team. His biological parents are from Ghana and he chose to play for the Italian national team. He has scored 13 goals in 33 appearances for the Italian national team.
Luis Nani: Portugal vs Cape Verde. Nani was born in Praia, Cape Verde but chose to play for his adopted country Portugal. The 28year old skilful attacker has scored more than 15 goals in over 83 appearances for the Portuguese national team since 2006. He is currently on loan to Sporting Lisbon from Manchester United.
Angelo Ogbonna: Italy vs. Nigeria. Angelo Ogbonna 26 was born in Cassino, Italy to Nigeria parents but chose to play for Italy. Nigeria lost out to Italy as the defender has a bright future. He play for Torino fc in Italy.
Jerome Boateng: Germany vs. Ghana. Jerome is the brother of Kevin Boateng who plays for the Ghanaian national team. Though both players played for the Germany youth team, Jerome chose to remain with the German national team. The talented defender is an important member of the 2014 world cup winning German national team.
Danny Welbeck (Daniel Nii Tackle Mensah Welbeck): England vs. Ghana. The Arsenal striker has been in the England national team since 2011. He has scored more than 13 goals in over 333 appearances for England. He chose England instead of Ghana, the country of his parents. Though Ghana made effort seven years ago to make him play for Ghana, he decided to wait for a call up for England.
Karim Benzema: France vs. Algeria. His parents made effort to make him play for Algeria; he chose to play for France. Born in France and a very important striker for Real Madrid and France.
Sami Khedira: Germany vs. Tunisia. He decided to play for Germany instead of Tunisia. An important member of the 2014 world cup winning Germany national team.
Blaise Matuidi: France vs. Angola. Born in France but could have played for Angola the country of his father, though the mother is from France. He chose to play for France.
Steve Mandanda: France vs. Congo. The France national team goal keeper was born in Kinshasa, the capital of Congo, but opted to play for France. The 29year old Marseille goal keeper has been consistent which have provided him a place in the squad of the 2010 world cup as well as the European championship in 2008 and 2012.
