There were reports during the week that the All Progressives Congress(APC) national leader Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu had dropped his endorsement of the former governor of Benue state senator George Akume as the APC candidate for the position of senate president in favour of senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe state. There are indications that the report has not gone down well with senators from the north east where Lawan comes from.
Senators from the northeast expressed displeasure at the news that people from other zones will determine who represent the interest of the zone as the next senate president. It is still unclear if the party will allot the position of senate president to the zone.
Addressing the media, the former governor of Gombe state and senator representing Gombe central , Danjuma Goje debunked the story that senator Ahmed Lawan has been endorsed for the position of senate president. He said the zone is pleading with the party leadership to allot the position of senate president to the zone.
Speaking on behalf of the ten senators present of the thirteen senators from the zone at the zones’ caucus meeting held at the Kaduna room of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel,Abuja, Goje said that the caucus resolved that the zone be allowed to decide who their choice should be rather than have imposition from outside.
According to Goje, Lawan was at the meeting and sneaked out only to be announced minutes later in the media as the choice of the party for the position of senate president. He said ‘this to us, the remaining Twelve APC senators-elect from the zone is fraudulent and unacceptable and in fact desperation at its peak.
Therefore, in the light of the above resolutions, we call on all Nigerians to completely disregard any purported endorsement of any senator from the northeast by any zone for the position yet because any position zone to us must have our input. We don’t know anything about any endorsement of anybody from the northeast being touted around through the pages of the newspapers.
‘We dissociate ourselves from any endorsements from other zones because the party has not zoned any position to us yet and we don’t want to jump the gun.
“To fear the world US has led for the better part of a century, abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe and refuse the obligations of international leadership… for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solving problems is unpatriotic. “
