Polls: Cameron writes Jonathan


With less than 48 hours to Nigeria’s Presidential Election, the United Kingdom (UK)’s Prime Minister, David Cameron, on Thursday wrote a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan, urging him to ensure a free, fair and credible poll.Cameron, in a letter titled: “Nigerian Presidential Elections – Letter from Prime Minister David Cameron to President Goodluck Jonathan” released by the British High Commission in Abuja, said delivering an electoral process that is credible will not only be a lasting credit to him as Nigerian president but to Nigeria also,
According to him, ” As Africa’s biggest democracy, successful elections in Nigeria are important not only for Nigeria’s future, but as a signal to the rest of Africa.  Delivering a credible process will be a lasting credit to you as President and to Nigeria as a nation.”

The prime minister also urged President Jonathan to ensure that Nigerian elections go ahead this weekend, warning that failure to do so “would risk national security and stability, and adversely affect Nigeria’s international reputation.” presidential election

Cameron, who emphasised the vital role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its head, Professor Attahiru Jega, said Jonathan’s support for “Jega’s continuing tenure and guidance of the process remains an important part of delivering successful elections.”
