The Ondo state assembly has impeached the Deputy governor of the state Ali Olanusi. The governor Mimiko has replaced him with the state commissioner for Agriculture Lasisi Oluboyo. The governor sent his name to the state house of assembly for confirmation on Monday morning. It will be recalled that the crisis came to a head of friday whenthe Olatunji Adeniyan led seven man panel set up by the chief judge of the Ondo state Justice Kumuyi Olaseinde submited its reports and there were indications that the deputy governor Ali Olanusi will be indicted on all counts. Fresh facts showed that the panel concluded that the deputy governor Ali Olanusi was found guilty as charged. Sources said that the deputy governor who is said to yet to travel will be impeached first thing on Monday.
It will be recalled that since the deputy governor defected to the APC, the relationship between the governor and the deputy has been frosty. In presenting a case for the impeachment of the deputy governor, the chief of staff to the governor, Kola Ademujimi had provided evidence on the seven point allegation of misconduct against the deputy governor, Ali Olanusi which included abuse of office by collecting N40m for medical treatment with providing receipts, absenteeism, truancy, breach of peace in the state and protecting his younger brother who was charged with forgery.
The counsel to the deputy governor Benson Enikuomehin had argued relying on section 36, sub section 1,2,and 3 that the deputy governor was not properly served the notice of impeachment, but the lawyer to the law makers,Dayo Akinlaja said that the deputy governor attorney was present is evidence that the deputy governor was well served. This led the counsel to the deputy governor Enikuomehin to withdraw from the proceedings.
The chairman of the panel Olatunji Adeniyan who promised to be fair in the matter said the panel was convinced that the deputy governor was properly served and that the panel will get back to the state assembly. The chief of staff to the governor and the permanent secretary in the office of the deputy governor Kehinde Temikotan were witnesses against the deputy governor. It was certain that with the withdrawal of legal representation for the deputy governor the coast was clear for his impeachment.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
