The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has threatened Igbos in Lagos who does not vote for the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate Akinwunmi Ambode. The Oba who has been one of the leading promoters of the aspiration of the APC candidate.
He issued the threat when the Igbos in Lagos paid him a courtesy visit to the monarch at his palace in the Lagos Island. He said everybody knows how I handpicked Ambode and he told the Igbos who came to see him that they must give their support to Ambode if they want to prosper in Lagos. He said he had told Jimi Agbaje that he cannot be governor of Lagos state at least for now. He said Agbaje is his blood relations.
The monarch said ‘what you cannot do in Aba or Onitsha you should not do it in Lagos. If you do what I like in Lagos, you will prosper but if you do otherwise, you will perish in the Lagoon.’ He said I swear in the Name of God Almighty, Allah and I am not ready to appeal to anybody. Observers are stunned by the threat of the monarch as they thought that as the father of all Lagos residents he would have been neutral. Some say that the APC are scared of the support the Igbos gave to the PDP in the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly elections. Some Igbos won elections in Lagos under the PDP and is likely to support Agbaje in the gubernatorial election. Some say the monarch is under pressure by the APC to do something to checkmate the Igbo support for PDP.
Meanwhile, the director of publicity of the PDP presidential campaign has condemned the threat of the Oba and called it ominous and unacceptable. He warned against intimidation and any action that could lead to breakdown of laws and order. He said this kind of threat cannot be swept under the carpet. He said, we want peace and no one will be allowed to turn us into slaves and give us sleepless night.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
