Suspected militants in the Niger Delta about 2.30am are alleged to have blown a major gas pipeline at Ighureneme community in Delta state. The inferno that arose from the incident has caused anxiety in the community and officials of the Nigeria petroleum development company, NPDC are making frantic effort to put the fire.
Officials say the gas pipeline links communities such as Kokori, Kwale, Ogini, Eriemu, Uzere, Afiesere, and Owue to the Ughelli Quality control centre. Efforts to put out the fire are still on going.
An unconfirmed report says a new group in the community had warned NPDC that they will disturb their activities as they are not included in the surveillance operation contract. Lt. Col. Mathew Oyekola of the 222 battalion said they have arrested 15 suspects in connection with the incident.
“IPOB is being sponsored by those I will call the Coalition of the politically disgruntled and the treasury looters. They believe that by sponsoring this group to destabilize the country and trigger chaos, they will realize their ambition of escaping justice and then be free to dip their hands into the nation’s treasury again.”
