National Sports Festival Torch Lands in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Wednesday received the torch for the 19th edition of the National Sports Festival holding at Abuja in December 2018.

Receiving the torch on behalf of Governor Wike, Deputy Governor Ipalibo Harry Banigo said that the Sports Festival Promotes Peace, unity, and friendship.

Governor Wike noted that Rivers State will always participate in events that enhance national unity and cohesion.

He said that sport has remained a key source of national unity, which should be advanced at all times.

Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Boma Iyaye said Rivers State is one of the nation’s key centres of sports development.

He said that the state hosted the sports festival in 1988 and 2011, pointing out that the record set in 2011 by Rivers State is yet to be broken.

Presenting the torch to Governor Wike, Zonal Director of Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Sunny Obot said that torch is a symbol of national unity which was lit by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 1, 2018.

He said that the torch has traveled through the different zones of the federation as is customary with Sports Festivals.

The torch presentation event was witnessed by officials of the Federal Ministry of Sports and their counterparts in Rivers State at the Government House Port Harcourt.
