President Goodluck Jonatahan was upbeat today at the launch of the 194 page book ‘ The People’s Choice: the story of President Goodluck Jonathan’ written by Rev. Father Charles Imokhai. He said his dream is to see a product of the Al- majiri programme of the federal government become President of Nigeria.
The President said he is not desperate to win the next election. He said his ambition is born out of the desire to serve and not out of desperation. In the past, he had said ‘no blood of any Nigerian is worth the ambition of any politician’.
He said politicians at all levels , from the Councillors to the highest position should be ready to serve the people and not be desperate to serve the people. He further said he is calm and unruffled by the stress of the political campaigns because ,he is ready to serve and not desperate to serve. He said if politicians are willing to serve and not desperate, Nigeria will be better for it . He concluded by saying that he is still going to write a more comprehensive work after leaving office.
Also present at the book launch was the former head of state Gen Yakubu Gowon who described President Jonathan as a great leader. He said Jonathan is a detribalised Nigerian and a great democrat. He said he hoped that all those present will vote for Jonathan. President Jonathan said the book captured his past and poor background. He said the good thing is that Nigeria is not a caste society otherwise he would not have even been a commissioner not to talk of becoming the President of Nigeria.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
