North Korea has publicly executed the country’s minister of defence, Hyon Yong Chol for failing to follow leader Kim Jong Un’s orders. Reports say apart from the accusation of general neglect of duty, Hyon was seen sleeping during a meeting organised by Kim Jong Un. Reports say he was executed without trial within two to three days of his arrest.
This is coming a few weeks after the reported execution of 15 senior officials including two vice ministers who had challenged Kim’s policies. Kim also executed his ex lover and popular actress Hyon Song Wol.
Observers say no one is sure what led to Hyon’s arrest and execution, although authorities in North Korea accuse him of treason. He was said to have been executed about April 30, 2015. According to a South Korean lawmaker and chairman of the National Assembly Intelligence committee, Kim Gwang Lim, Hyon fall from grace was swift and decisive.
Observers believe that the recent elimination of perceived enemies of the state is a scheme by Kim Jong Un to apply the politics of fear and to consolidate his grip on power by creating an atmosphere of fear.
Reports also say that Kim Jong Un had earlier ordered his aunt Kim Kyong Hui to be poisoned about May 5 or 6 2014 for complaining angrily when her husband, Jang Song Thaek who was presumed to the guardian and number man to Kim was killed in December 2013.
In North Korea, you don’t disagree with Kim or you are a dead man.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
