President of the Senate Senator David Mark on Monday commended the Flying Eagles of Nigeria over their victory at the 2015 African Youth Championships in Senegal on Sunday.
The NIGERIA under 20 national team defeated host Senegal by a lone goal at the 45,000 capacity Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar on Sunday to win the trophy for the 7th time.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark said the NIGERIAN lads’ superlative performance at the tournament has further “stamped our authority as a leading soccer nation in Africa.”
He specifically praised the Garba Manu led boys for rising up to the occasion when it mattered.
He said: ” This victory coming at this critical moment of the 2015 general elections is a reassurance that the forthcoming elections would be successful. The team spirit displayed by our boys at the championship is an attribute all NIGERIANS must emulate.
“Together, we can address our challenges if we resolve to work as one people with a common purpose.”
He noted that the victorious Flying Eagles deserves “our commendation and rewards. They are our heroes. They have rekindled our hope and pride.”
He accordingly reminded the federal government of the need to do the needful to reward the Flying Eagles to serve as an elixir for future laurel for the nation.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
