Lionel Messi hits milestone 400th goal for Barcelona
Lionel Messi tapped in Barcelona second goal on the dot of stoppage time (93rd minutes) to seal victory over Valencia.
It was like it will never happen as fans waited for Messi’s 400th goal for Barcelona. Finally the goal which was described by fans as a stamp of authority by Messi because of the audacious way he took the ball from his half sliced through the keeper and tucked it into the net to put Barcelona two goals ahead against Valencia.
Luis Suarez had very early in the game scored the opener for Barcelona. Although Suarez was replaced about 25 minutes to the end of the game, he was quite decisive in the first half and if he continues in this form he is likely to pick the league winners medal in his first season in Spain. Suarez goal could have counted for nothing had Valencia took advantage of their dominance in the first and also for the good save of the penalty by Barcelona keeper Bravo.
It took the determination of Lionel Messi to race from his half of the field to hit the goal after the attempt hit the keeper and rebound to Messi before he scored the second goal at stoppage time.
Barcelona coach Luis Enrique could not hide his joy. He said ‘Messi gave us what he always gives us. But it’s not just about him; it’s about the whole forward line and the whole team.’
The first half was quite competitive with Valencia almost equalising in the eight minutes. That would have been the game charger but they ran out of steam in the second half which game Barcelona to play their game and effectively dominate the game. For all their dominance in the second half there was no reward for Barcelona until Messi raced clear to score the second at the nick of time in a manner reminiscence of his style. That was the last kick of the game.
With the second goal against Valencia, Messi reached the milestone 400th goal in 471 games for Barcelona. 309 goals in the league with 141 assist.
With this victory, Barcelona is still on top of the La liga table with 2 points ahead of arch rival Real Madrid
