The Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho agrees with Arsene Wenger of Arsenal on the legitimacy of the Ballon d’Or award. Wenger last year argued against the award. At least this is one area that both adversary coach are on the same page.
According to Mourinho, ‘I think Wenger said something that is interesting, he is against the Ballon d’Or, and I think he’s right, because in this moment football is losing a little bit the concept of the team to focus on the individual. We are always looking at the individual stat, the player that runs more. Because you run11 km in a game and I run 9km you did a better job than I did. Maybe not. Maybe my 9km were more important than your 11.
Real Madrid Ronaldo beats Barcelona Messi and Bayern Neuer to this year’s award. It is the third time Ronaldo will win the award as he won it the second time under Mourinho in Real Madrid.
According to Mourinho , football is collective. ‘The individual is welcome if you want to make our group better. But you have to work for us not we to work for you. When the top player arrives, the team is already there. It’s not him who comes to discover the team like Columbus discovering America. No no you are coming now to help us be better. And as a manager you have to give this message every day.’
It is not clear at what point that Mourinho started holding this opinion because he had won the manager of the year and did not criticise the award. .
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
