According to the constitution of the People Democracy Party (PDP) as was revised before the exit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the board of trustee of the party shall be a former president. There are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan may be an exception to the rule.
Reports say that he has declined the offer to chair the BOT of the PDP. He says he would prefer to take a break from politics for a year. It is not clear why he has declined the offer. It is reported that the decision of the president may not go down well with the first lady. The reports are still speculative as the cohesion of the party is rather murky. The leadership is trying to find its direction.
Most of the party leadership will prefer the president to chair the BOT so that they will be guaranteed the freedom to express their views. They argued that one of the reasons the party seem to have disintegrated was the suppression of contrary views by the leadership of the party.
Chief Tony Anenih is the current chairman of the BOT of the party. He is also revered by President Jonathan. Reports say that the offer of chairman of BOT was a way of placating the President for the loss and disappointment he suffered from the lacklustre approach of some party members in securing their states. Unconfirmed reports say that the international community may be preparing to keep the president busy with an international assignment.
It remains to be seen what the final decision of President Jonathan will be.
“IPOB is being sponsored by those I will call the Coalition of the politically disgruntled and the treasury looters. They believe that by sponsoring this group to destabilize the country and trigger chaos, they will realize their ambition of escaping justice and then be free to dip their hands into the nation’s treasury again.”
