The president of the senate, David Mark told the senate that President Goodluck Jonathan’s action of conceding defeat at the presidential election had added value to the consolidation of democracy in the country. He said ‘in the regard, I would like to commend the maturity and sportsmanship displayed by President Jonathan, who willingly conceded defeat and immediately congratulated the president-elect major general Muhammadu Buhari, even before the independent national electoral commission,INEC, announced the result.
He said the action of President Jonathan saved the nation from violence and monumental crisis. He said the president through this singular action, raised the benchmark for peaceful democratic transition and consequently set a new democratic template in Africa, which is notorious for its infamous sit tight leaders.
He added that the outcome of the election have disappointed the doomsday prophets and some members of the international community that had predicted that Nigeria will disintegrate in 2015. According to him, Nigeria ‘has greatly disappointed the doomsday prophets who predicted disaster and even a possible break up of our country. I consider it imperative at this point to share my thought with you. The beauty of every contest is in participating. Sometimes we win and sometimes we loss. It is the same with every election. Whichever way it goes, as long as it reflects the wishes of the people and it is in the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians we must learn to accept the outcome in good faith.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
