The president of Ghana and the chairman of the authority of states and governments of Ecowas, John Dramani Mahama paid a solidarity visit to President Jonathan on the successful conducts of elections in Nigeria. He was speaking at the state house Abuja when he commended President Good luck Jonathan on his statesmanship in congratulating the president elect even before the final results were announced. President Mahama expressed happiness at the level of maturity displayed by President Jonathan.
President Mahama had earlier visited president the elections to encourage the country to conduct a free and fair election. He said he came to confer with President Jonathan on several issues with regards to Ecowas and used the opportunity to commend the president on his maturity.
President Mahama said that Nigeria plays a major role in the sub region as not only the biggest economy in the sub region but the whole of Africa. He said that Nigeria and Ghana holds a special relationship and both countries are close. He said both countries share a common value and ‘we will make our bonds even stronger.’
President Mahama also visited president elect Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him on his electoral victory. He said other African countries must learn from the success of Nigeria in the conduct of the elections. On the issue of xenophobic attacks , president Mahama said the youths in South Africa are not aware of the roles African countries played to end apartheid in South Africa. On insurgency, he said that Ecowas is forming a strategic partnership to solve the problem of insecurity in the region.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
