Former President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt who ruled the nation with iron fist for about three decades and has been in hospital-jail since 2011 on corruption charges and murder may walk home free soon baring appeals.
The Egyptian court of appeal upheld a three year sentence against the 87 year old Mubarak on corruption charges accounting for the time he has already served which gives the former president the opportunity to walk home free. This was the last court case against former president Mubarak who was toppled in the 2011 uprising.
It was not clear when he will be allowed to go home. Over the years since his ouster Egypt has been harshly divided between the sympathisers of the Muslim brotherhood led government of Muhammad Morsi who jailed Mubarak and the moderates who are sympathetic to the military led government of Abdel Fatah El- Sisi. President El-SIsi who was the head of the military and a known sympathiser of Mubarak also toppled the Morsi government.
There is however a chance for appeal which means that it is not yet ‘Uhuru’ for Mubarak. It is however not clear when Mubarak will be going home.
Meanwhile, his sons were given four years each in the same case which relates to misappropriation of public funds meant for the renovation of the presidential palaces but were used to renovate their private houses.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
