A section of the federal secretariat in Abuja was on fire on Thursday. The cause of the fire is unknown. As at the time of last reporting different agencies of government were making frantic efforts to put out the fire.
The building which houses the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of police affairs and the Ministry of Health was in confusion as workers scampered for safety. Eyewitnesses say that the fire started in the sixth floor of the eleventh floor building and it was difficult to put out the fire as the fire extinguishers had expired and it was difficult for fire service to get to the top of the building. The fire they say started about 2 pm when the Minister of Education was holding his final meeting with the principals of the 104 Federal Unity schools. It is feared that the fire started in the finance department of the Ministry of Education . There were efforts from various agencies of government including NEMA, FRSC, Army and the police who made efforts to organise the people to mitigate the situation.
The equipment of the fire service of the Federal service and the FCT fire service seemed inadequate for a building of that height. They had problem with their ladders and other equipment and the fire service workers did not meet any equipment in the building to assist their work. They were finally able to put the fire out.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
