The national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Ahmadu Adamu Mu’azu on Wednesday resigned. There have been huge pressure on him and the leadership of the National Working Committee of the PDP to resign as has been witnessed in the elections in the UK recently. Among those who have been on the call for the chairman to resign are Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti, Babangida Aliyu of Niger and Sule Lamido of Jigawa. On Tuesday Femi Fani Kayode also lend his voice to the call for the leadership of the National working Committee to resign as they have failed the party. He also accused some of them of sabotaging the party in the last general elections.
Mu’azu resignation letter was sent to the Deputy National Chairman Uche Secondus whom he has asked to take charge as the acting chairman. In his letter embattled chairman has said that due to the abysmal performance of the PDP in the last general elections, it has become imperative for him to resign for peace to reign in the party. He also said that in line with the section 42:2 of the constitution of the party, Secondus should act as the chairman.
The national secretary of the PDP prof . Olawale Oladipo confirmed that chairman has resigned on health grounds and that the deputy national chairman Uche Secondus is to act pending when they get a replacement from the northeast. He said the National working committee has confidence in the performance and ability of the publicity secretary Olisa Metuh. He said they were impressed inthe way and manner the responsibility of publicity secretary has bee carried out.
Meanwhile, there are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan has asked the chairman of the Board of Trustee of the PDP Tony Anenih to resign. It is not clear yet whether chief Anenih will heed the call of the President. On the issue of the status of the chairman of the BOT ,the national secretary said decisions will be concluded tomorrow.
The national working committee of the PDP is meeting. By the end of today what is left of the leadership of the PDP will become clearer. The national secretary said that the meeting continues tomorrow.
The Ekiti state governor Ayo Fayose said that the resignation is a good development and that it is good for democracy and good for the PDP. He said the chairman of the party Mua’zu has done well to toe the part of honour. He said they still see him as their leader. He said the resignation of Muazu was normal and that is what is done all over the world. He assured that the party will get over the present crisis. The director of Media and Publicity of the PDP presidential campaign organisation said the resignation is normal and that the party will get over this period. He said that this is the time for the party to reorganise itself. He said there are more people to go so as to enhance the party fortunes. He said it will give room fro fresh leadership. That this will give confidence and hope to the members. He said he will not keep quiet until those who contributed to the misfortunes of the party are gone.
