As the leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the South East gathered in Owerri town hall in Imo state, led by Ogbonaya Onu and Governor Rochas Okorocha, they reassured the Igbos of relevance in the Buhari’s government. Ogbonaya Onu said there was a sufficient reasons for the Igbos to embrace the APC. He said the effort to build the APC started two years ago with somebody from Igbo land. He said that they found out that if the election in 2015 in the South East had gone the way of the 2011 election, the APC could not have won the election.
He added that the Igbos is known to settle wherever they go. He said they are known to have raised their families. According to him, outside the East, the Igbos is known to be the next in population to the indigenous community. He also said that the creativity, innovativeness of the Igbos gives them a special place and with the emergence of the APC in July, 2013 barely 20 months ago the way politics is played has changed considerably.
He said that for the first time in Nigeria, political power will be transferred to another party. That Nigeria is moving in a new direction. The people of the South East must not be left behind. He said the Igbos gave their best to the PDP and got nothing in return. He said the time for change has come and the people of the South East must embrace the APC.
He said when leaders like Gowon, Obasanjo, Shagari, Buhari, IBB, Abubakar and Jonathan gather, no one of them is from the South East. He urged the South East should think seriously. That the people of the South East need Nigeria just as Nigeria need the people of the South East. He said as a people who travel widely and make home of everywhere they go, they should APC their home. He said their arms were open to receive the Igbos.
He said the video that was shown at the venue is evidence of the harassment the APC faced during the last election. He also said the laws of the country were set aside. He assured the audience that the ‘APC was born to correct injustice.’
He said the people of the South East should give the president elect the support as they build a nation of laws in which no man, woman is above the law. The time has come for the Igbos to work together to heal the wounds.
He said the South East will work with the administration of Buhari to defeat injustice and arrogance in governance.
Also speaking at the occasion, the governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha quoting psalm 126, said when the lord set the captivity of the people free they were like those who were dreaming. He said the PDP that was once the ruling party is now the opposition party. He said they saw tomorrow. He also said if they had follow the political opportunists where would the Igbos been today.
He said the APC is not a government of propaganda. He asked those aggrieved to shield their sword as the oppression of their people by the people was not to the knowledge of Abuja.
He said while he commends Jega, he wants him to know that there was no election in 24 local governments. He said the APC does not believe in Vengeance and used the opportunity to invite Igbo leaders to join the APC.
He said if the APC was not rigged out of the election, they could be asking for the position of senate president or speaker. He said that is no longer possible.
He commended President Jonathan for conceding defeat and urged him not to allow himself to be deceived again by political jobbers. He assured them that Igbo position would elude them.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
