The leader of the leading Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti has criticised the Federal High court judgement sitting in Lagos barring the military from the elections. He said the military should not be barred from the elections.
According to the Afenifere leader, Nigeria has not developed to the extent that we should conduct elections without the presence of the military.
He said past elections had shown that the hijacking of ballot boxes and the disruption of elections were possible because the security at elections were not adequate.
He also said that the hoodlums and politicians, mainly those who are certain will not win elections will take advantage of this judgement to cause confusion during and after the elections. He said unpopular politicians will want to cause confusion at the polls.
‘It is disingenuous to accuse everyone who calls for restructuring as trying to break up the county. History tells us that that kind of cheap blackmail will not work as long as the underlying reasons for the agitations persist.’
‘The biggest challenge seems to be that we seem to be allowing moderate voices on this issue to be drowned out by the reckless utterances of a few rabble rousers on all sides who may be tools in the hands of those who do not wish this country well. These are some of the people who arrogate to themselves the toga of spokespersons of our diverse groups.’
