The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) have formed a partnership to launch a copyright awareness and enforcement campaign to create a well-regulated broadcast space and do away with piracy of protected broadcast signals across Nigeria.
The Director-General of NCC, John Asein, and the Director-General of NTA disclosed these developments recently when the DG of NCC paid a courtesy visit to the NTA’s Headquarters in Abuja.
Asein stated that in commemorating the NCC’s 30th anniversary in August 2019, the Commission was thrilled to team up with the NTA to celebrate copyright owners and appreciate the contributions of authors and creative industries to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
The DG of NCC sought the support of NTA to place creativity on the forefront of national discourse, to instill a culture of respect for copyright in Nigerians, especially among the youth; and to send a strong message out that Nigeria has zero tolerance for piracy.
He called for joint efforts from NCC and NTA in doing an intellectual property (IP) audit of NTA rights and assured Nigerians that the NCC would intensify its enforcement measures to shut down the copyright infringement outlets in unauthorized hotels, TV stations, and airports, among many others.
Mallam Ibn Muhammed, the Director-General of NTA, noted that piracy would decrease with more public enlightenment and pledged that NTA would support the NCC in its campaign to educate Nigerians on the values of respect for copyright and creativity and the legal implications of the piracy of protected creative works.
The Director-General declared that the NTA would partner with the NCC to secure its assets across the country and help create an improved broadcasting environment that is adequately regulated by Nigeria’s laws.
